This novel is a bit of a mixed bag for me. It starts out, not as a wuxia novel, but more like a romance. i.e. The female lead is in an abusive relationship until her scumbag fiance dumps her for the richest girl who'll have him. Unlike a romance however, the FL isn't saved by a rich, handsome, yet somehow still single CEO, but begins cultivating.
Now, this story has some interesting aspects to it. Because the story takes place in a modern "definitely not China", the author incorporates many quirks that separate it from other wuxia novels.
The problem, however, arises from the seemingly random plot. One minute you'll be reading about the troubles of cultivating in the modern world, then BAM! The next moment, the FL spontaneously decides to travel halfway around the world where she encounters some ancient thing that instantly changes the setting into a full on xianxia novel. Giant bat demons and soul stealing arrays abound. Then after that arc, FL just arbitrarily decides to wander around for a year to do cultivator stuff, and then one day she just shows up back home, and it's like she never left. Sometimes, this change is so abrupt, I had to go back to the previous chapter, just to make sure that I didn't miss anything. It really feels like the author only had the tiniest idea of where they wanted the story to go, and just filled in the blanks with whatever happened to pop into their head at the time.
