It's not an inferiorty complex. It's just econcomics. Say you wanted to do well in bussiness globally, or rather, you want to comunicate with others across the globe easily. Or say you just wanted to watch a lot of the media created in the West. What's language should you learn? Chinese, Spanish, French... or the lingua franca today: Englsih. There are tons of countries that were never defeated by the British that still want to learn English. Why? Because of the usability and power it holds. Just by learning English you've increase your job oppurtunities and the types of media you can consume. Rwanada, a former French colony, even changed thier offical second language to English for that reason.

The fact that English is a universal language is indeed common sense, partly because it is simple to learn. But in asian novels/dramas, knowing English is often treated as "godly skill" worthy of everyone's shock, praise and awe. Even if you don't know anything else, just throw a few English words with "pure British accent" (even if it's on a level of "My name is Bob") in whatever meeting and you will be treated like a "real genius". Maybe they have a hard time learning it because of language differences or smth, but knowing English is often really "overpriced" and it looks absurd. I guess just like it is common to think that "everything foreign is better", same with "foreign language is better"

English isn't simple to learn, though? English grammar rules are pretty erratic. So there's a lot of nuance to learn or else you sound silly.

Comparatively speaking ofc (I always sound silly). Every language has its own nuances, and I'm not trying to undermine it in any way. Maybe I'm prejudiced because my native language is Russian, which is, well, chaotic, but English is very systematic (comparatively, again) and thus easier to learn. There is more or less fixed sentence structure, not that much of word forms (not dozens per word because why not), standard pronunciation rules for most cases and easy alphabet. And then we have languages like Chinese where even natives sometimes can't understand each other, and you can accidentally insult someone because of wrong intonation. I won't mention memes about Russian where stuff is sometimes very random and hard to understand if you're not a native speaker

No, what you're not getting is that anyone knowing another language is interesting and cool in of itself. We're not talking about learning it as a kid, but learning it as an adult, taking language classes. That is impressive because it's hard learning a language, you don't speak every day. I took Spanish multiple years in High school, still can't speak anything, but the basics. Now imagine, a kid that knew no Spanish, and just by taking a few high school courses, they start to speak it well. That's like a genius. It's the same reason people think polyglots, are cool/interesting. In other words, it's not the English that's amazing, it's their ability to learn it easily, while their peers cannot.

Polyglots are cool, but other languages are just never mentioned. And English is not just a cool and useful skill but a symbol of status. Have you never met this situations in novels/dramas when someone is treated like country bumpkin because they don't know it (they are literally despised, be it kids or adults) or treated like nobles because they said a few words with barely understandable accent? It's everywhere. If you know other skills, then you are just another passersby, but if it's English, then you are elite genius. Maybe because studying and working abroad will also raise your status, so English is a necessity, but not everyone can learn it

Yes, knowing a second language as popular as English is a status symbol. Again, for good reasons. Imagine you're a person that only knows Korean. You've limited who you can do business with to only Koreans. Remember, we're in a world of globalization now. This is not a Korean specific thing. I'm from Africa and knowing a second language is important. If you ever want the good jobs, or to do business deals with large companies, then knowing an international language like English is necessary. It's not an inferiority complex, it's just smart. Imagine you're hiring employees, one can only speak Korean, the other can speak both Korean and English. Imagine their resumes are basically identical, which one would you hire? Even if it's just something simple like being a cashier. Imagine how many tourists your English speaking employee can interact with. It's a class thing because the higher paying jobs, are the same jobs where you need to interact with outsiders even more.

What I meant is not that it is bad or anything. Any additional skills are good, but their love for English is a bit exaggerated. In my country learning English as second language is pretty much compulsory and everyone will know it to a certain extent, at least a few words. Even my grandma tried to learn just because it is useful. But in novels it is often praised not as must-have, but elite skill, like learning piano or calligraphy. For example in-laws despised the bride because of her low background, but then her aunt went on stage and congratulated her in English instead of Chinese and they don't despise the bride that much anymore. Even though her aunt is just a teacher and don't really use language skills anywhere else. But if she was physics teacher - no way she will get the same treatment. Such exaggeration is a bit absurd and really common, that's why I started talking about it

It's simple. Just like learning an instrument is seen as amazing, learning a useful language is seen as admirable as well. Imagine, a person you never expected plays the violin adequately, you subconsciously start to think of them as talented. And learning Physics would do the same. It's just harder to show Physics aptitude than it is to show knowing a second language. How many stories of people being low class, but then solving a hard math/physics problem and changing their lives? Or how about this: The MC is sleeping or shows up late for class, the teacher calls them out and says solve this question on the board. And they solve a problem most of the others could not. That's a classic way of showing competence. in story. Also, learning a second language when you don't use it every day is even more of an achievement. So sure, she may be a teacher and not use it every day, but what that shows people is that she's smart enough to learn a second language easily.
